About this combo

The 10-Day Safari & Zanzibar Combo is Tanzania's most complete holiday — two world-class experiences in perfect sequence. Five days through the Northern Circuit's greatest wildlife landscapes give way to four nights on the Spice Island's white-sand beaches and turquoise Indian Ocean waters. The contrast between the raw drama of the Serengeti and the languid beauty of Zanzibar makes each destination more vivid and memorable.

All departures are private. Your safari has a dedicated 4×4 vehicle and TANAPA-licensed naturalist guide for all five days, with full board throughout. Zanzibar includes return flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, curated beach accommodation, guided Stone Town heritage walk, spice tour, and a sunset dhow cruise. Everything managed by one expert team with no logistics gaps.

Tanzania's most popular honeymoon itinerary

The Safari & Zanzibar Combo is our most requested honeymoon package. Adventure and romance in equal measure — predator hunts on the Serengeti followed by private villa mornings on a white-sand beach. We offer full honeymoon enhancements: private bush dinners, rose-petal turndowns, romantic beach setups, sunset dhow cocktails, couples' spa treatments, and anniversary cake arrangements. Tell us the occasion when booking.

Why safari first — always

We always sequence safari before Zanzibar, never the reverse. After five days of active game driving, the beach is the perfect decompression — lying in a hammock watching the Indian Ocean after having watched a cheetah hunt from a Land Cruiser is one of the great lifestyle contrasts. Going to Zanzibar first and then trying to focus on game drives while thinking about the beach you just left is universally reported as less satisfying.

Seamless transfer to Zanzibar

On Day 6 your driver collects you from your safari camp after breakfast and transfers you to Arusha airport or Dar es Salaam for your flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ). Flights take 55–90 minutes. Your Zanzibar host meets you at the airport with a cold towel and chilled coconut water. Zero logistics on your part — you never need to think about the transfer.

Five days through Tanzania's four greatest wildlife parks in a private vehicle with your expert naturalist guide. Full board — breakfast, bush lunch, and dinner at your lodge or camp throughout.

  1. Your guide and private 4×4 collect you after breakfast for the drive to Tarangire — Tanzania's most underrated park, renowned for its baobab forests, the Tarangire River corridor, and elephant herds that can number in the hundreds. Full afternoon game drive on entry.

  3. The drive from Ngorongoro into the Serengeti is one of East Africa's great journeys — descending through highland forest before the plains open to an almost incomprehensible horizon. Game driving begins immediately on entry through the Naabi Hill Gate. The central Seronera area holds resident lion prides and leopards lounging in fig trees year-round.

  4. A full dawn-to-dusk day — arguably the finest single day of wildlife viewing available anywhere on Earth. Dawn drive at 6:00 am catches the last of the night's predator activity, followed by a bush breakfast in the field. Afternoon drives through herds that can stretch to the horizon. Your guide tracks big cats by radio and experience, staying at sightings as long as you want.

  5. The Ngorongoro Crater — a 260 km² enclosed ecosystem with approximately 25,000 large mammals. The crater floor is one of Africa's most densely populated wildlife areas. The black rhino population is among the world's most accessible. After 6–7 hours on the crater floor you ascend and overnight near the rim — ready for the flight to Zanzibar tomorrow.

🏖
White sand beaches
Powdery coral sand, turquoise water, and palm shade on the east and north coasts — Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje.
🐠
Coral reef snorkelling
Snorkel or dive the Mnemba Atoll conservation area — turtles, dolphin, rays, and extraordinary reef fish.
🏛
Stone Town — UNESCO
The historic heart of Zanzibar — labyrinthine alleyways, carved wooden doors, the slave market, and Freddie Mercury's birthplace.
🌿
Spice farm tour
Walk through a working spice plantation — cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper, and ylang-ylang growing wild in tropical forest.
Sunset dhow cruise
An hour on a traditional wooden dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. Cocktails on board, dolphins frequently following.
🐢
Sea turtle sanctuary
Nungwi's sea turtle sanctuary — swim with rescued green and hawksbill turtles in a natural lagoon. Unforgettable close encounter.

Best time to go

Both the Northern Circuit and Zanzibar work year-round. This table shows how timing affects each leg:

Months Safari Game Viewing Migration Zanzibar Sea Overall
Jan – Feb Excellent Calving — southern plains Calm · warm · clear Ideal
Mar – May Good Western corridor Some swell (long rains) Acceptable
Jun – Jul Excellent Massing · western Calm · warm · clear Ideal
Aug – Oct Excellent River crossings — north Warm · calm · best diving Peak season
Nov Good Returning south Short rains · some swell Acceptable
Dec Excellent Southern plains Calm · festive · busy Ideal

The Serengeti Migration's dramatic river crossings occur July–October in the northern Serengeti. If this is a priority, plan for those months — the Zanzibar sea conditions are also at their best during this period, making it the finest window for the complete combo.

Frequently asked questions

  • Always safari first, Zanzibar second — without exception. Five days of active wildlife game driving requires physical and mental alertness that is best given fresh energy. After the safari, the beach is the ideal decompression — lying in the Indian Ocean shade after having sat with a cheetah family on the Serengeti is one of the great experiential contrasts. Going to Zanzibar first consistently leaves guests wanting to stay longer and feeling distracted on the safari.
  • This is our most popular honeymoon itinerary. The combination of adventure (Serengeti lion at dawn) and romance (private beach dinner as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean) is genuinely unmatched anywhere in Africa. We offer full honeymoon enhancements for the Premium and Luxury tiers: private bush dinners, rose-petal turndowns, champagne on arrival, sunset dhow cocktails, couples' spa treatments, and beach setup surprises. Tell us it's a honeymoon when you enquire — we'll note the occasion throughout.
  • On Day 6, after breakfast at your Ngorongoro rim lodge, your driver transfers you to the nearest airstrip or Arusha airport for a scheduled flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ). The flight takes 55–90 minutes. All flights are included in your package. Your Zanzibar host meets you at ZNZ airport and transfers you to your resort. You never need to manage any logistics — it all happens seamlessly.
  • Yes — our three-part Kilimanjaro + Safari + Zanzibar expedition is our most complete Tanzania package. The sequence is: Kilimanjaro climb first (6–8 days), recovery day in Moshi, then the 5-day Northern Circuit safari, then Zanzibar. Total duration is approximately 15–18 days. It is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences available anywhere in the world — summit Africa's highest peak, track the Big Five, then collapse on a white sand beach. Ask us for the full three-part quote.
  • Swimming and snorkelling are possible year-round in Zanzibar. The calmest seas and best underwater visibility are during the dry seasons — January–February and June–October. During the long rains (March–May), the sea can have more swell on the east coast, but the north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) remains sheltered and calm. Water temperature stays between 26–29°C throughout the year — always warm, always inviting.
  • Absolutely — simply mention how many extra nights you'd like when enquiring and we'll include them in your quote. Many travellers add 2–3 additional nights to explore different parts of the island (north coast for the nightlife; east coast for kitesurfing; south for quiet seclusion). We can also arrange a mid-stay move from one area of Zanzibar to another for variety.
