Planning your trip

Best time to visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a year-round destination. Conditions vary by season and by which beach area you choose. Nungwi's north-facing beach is the most protected and swimmable at all times of year.

Months Weather Swimming Kite surfing (Paje) Prices
Jan – Feb Dry · Warm · Sunny Excellent Peak winds Mid–high
March Short rains begin Good Good Mid
Apr – May Long rains · Humid Fair Poor Lowest prices
Jun – Jul Dry · Cooler · Ideal Excellent Peak season High (peak)
Aug – Oct Dry · Warm · Clear Excellent Peak season High (peak)
November Short rains Good Poor Mid
December Dry · Warm · Festive Excellent Moderate High (Christmas)
Nungwi is the best beach in any season

Because Nungwi faces north, it is largely protected from the seasonal southeast trade winds that can make east coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani) rough for swimming during kite-surfing season. If you're unsure when to go, Nungwi during June–October is the gold standard — perfect swimming, low humidity, and brilliant visibility.

Guest stories

What guests say about Zanzibar

★★★★★

"We came to Zanzibar after our Kilimanjaro summit and it was the most perfect possible ending. Three days with nothing to do but float in the warmest, clearest water we'd ever seen. Stone Town on the final morning was the icing on the cake — the night market alone was worth the trip."

Rachel & Ben Crawford
Post-Kili Beach Recovery · March 2025
★★★★★

"Resilience arranged our 10-night safari and Zanzibar combo. The transition from watching lions in the Serengeti to sipping cocktails on Nungwi beach three days later was surreal in the most beautiful way. The private snorkelling day at Mnemba was unlike anything I've experienced."

Maya Kowalski
Safari + Zanzibar Combo · October 2024
★★★★★

"We chose Kendwa for our honeymoon. The sunrise over the Indian Ocean from our room, the full moon party on the beach, the sunset dhow dinner — every moment was exactly as magical as we dreamed. The local team was exceptional and made us feel genuinely welcomed."

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Fly from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) to Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) — about 1 hour. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Zanair operate multiple daily flights. We book all domestic flights as part of your package. Prices are approximately $120–180 per person one-way. Alternatively, a ferry from Dar es Salaam takes about 2 hours — we arrange that too if you prefer.
  • Zanzibar is part of Tanzania — your Tanzania e-visa (applied for at evisa.go.tz, approximately $50 USD) covers Zanzibar as well as mainland Tanzania. No separate Zanzibar visa is required. You will go through a simple immigration card process at Zanzibar Airport, but this is a formality.
  • The Indian Ocean around Zanzibar is warm (26–30°C year-round), very clear, and generally safe for swimming at approved beach areas. Nungwi and Kendwa have the calmest, most consistent water year-round. East coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani) experience low tides that expose the reef flat — the water is often shallow at low tide and best for swimming at high tide. Your hotel will advise on daily tidal conditions.
  • Light cotton clothing for the beach and town, a long-sleeved shirt or light trousers/dress for Stone Town visits (conservative dress is appreciated in the Islamic old town), reef shoes or water shoes for reef flat walking, high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen (important for protecting Mnemba's coral), snorkelling mask if you have one (fins and masks are available to hire), and mosquito repellent for evenings.
  • Absolutely — and it's one of the world's greatest travel experiences. The three-act Tanzania expedition: Kilimanjaro summit → recovery day in Moshi → Northern Circuit safari → fly to Zanzibar. We handle all three components as one seamlessly coordinated package. The contrast between Kilimanjaro's glaciers, the Serengeti's vastness, and Zanzibar's ocean is profoundly moving. See our Kilimanjaro + Safari expedition guide for full planning details.
  • Yes — Zanzibar is a very safe destination and one of the most popular in East Africa for solo travellers, including solo women. Normal urban precautions apply in Stone Town at night (use established taxis, don't walk alone down dark alleys after dark). Beach resort areas are very safe. Our team is on call 24/7 throughout your stay for any assistance or guidance you need.
  • Yes — this is actually our strongest recommendation. Booking Kilimanjaro, safari, and Zanzibar separately from different operators creates a coordination problem where a delay in one component cascades into the others. Resilience Expedition handles all three from our Moshi base as a single expedition — one booking, one point of contact, all logistics coordinated. If Kilimanjaro takes an extra day, we adjust the downstream components accordingly.
  • For July–October (peak season) we recommend booking at least 3–4 months in advance, particularly for the Nungwi luxury lodges and Kendwa boutique properties which have very limited availability. December bookings can be made with 2–3 months lead time. For April–June you can usually book 4–8 weeks ahead. We always recommend locking in dates as early as possible — the best rooms go first.
