About this safari

The 5-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari is the most popular safari itinerary we offer — and for good reason. It visits all four of Tanzania's greatest Northern Circuit parks in a well-paced five days: Tarangire's extraordinary elephant density, Lake Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions and flamingo shallows, two nights on the Serengeti including a full dawn-to-dusk Day 4, and a complete descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the itinerary that most first-time Tanzania visitors describe as exactly what they imagined Africa to be.

The addition of Lake Manyara on Day 2 is what distinguishes this safari from the 4-day circuit. The park's unique tree-climbing lion population — almost certainly Tanzania's most discussed wildlife curiosity — and the flamingo-pink lake shallows make it a genuinely distinctive destination that adds real value to the Northern Circuit. More importantly, Day 2 in Manyara provides an additional night of Ngorongoro highlands acclimatisation before the Serengeti approach — making the overall pacing of the 5-day circuit better than the 4-day version.

Tree-climbing lions — why Lake Manyara matters

Lions that rest in tree branches 3–5 m above the ground are a behaviour found in only a handful of locations worldwide — and Lake Manyara is the most famous. No other Northern Circuit park offers this. The exact reason Manyara's lions climb trees is still debated among researchers (theories include escaping tsetse flies, cooling in the breeze, and better predator sighting lines), which makes an encounter with a lioness spread along a fever tree branch all the more extraordinary. Most reliably sighted October–February.

Your guide — five days, one expert

A single TANAPA-licensed naturalist guide accompanies your group for all five days. The same person who spots your first Tarangire elephant on Day 1 will be alongside you watching lions at Manyara on Day 2, following the wildebeest on Day 4, and searching for black rhino in the crater on Day 5. This continuity builds a genuine relationship with an expert who learns your interests and tailors each day accordingly.

Ideal post-Kilimanjaro safari

The 5-day safari is one of our two most popular post-Kilimanjaro add-ons (alongside the 4-day). After Kilimanjaro and a recovery day in Moshi, you depart on Day 1 of this safari and return to Moshi on Day 5 evening. Five days of relaxed, wildlife-rich game driving is the perfect physical counterpoint to seven days of summit effort. See combined Kilimanjaro + Safari pricing →

Four extraordinary parks

Each of the four parks on this circuit has a completely different character — forest and riverine, flamingo lake, open savanna, and volcanic crater. No two days look the same.

Tarangire National Park

Tanzania's most underrated park — ancient baobab forests, the Tarangire River drawing elephant herds of hundreds, and predator density that rivals the Serengeti. 550+ bird species. The park that most surprises first-time visitors.

Day by day itinerary

  1. Your private 4×4 and naturalist guide collect you after breakfast. The drive south from Moshi (~2 hours) delivers you to Tarangire Gate. Tarangire is one of Africa's finest wildlife parks — extraordinary elephant density, a landscape of ancient baobabs, and predator sightings that surprise most first-time visitors. Lions, leopards, and cheetah are all resident year-round.

    07:00
Hotel pickup — Moshi or ArushaPrivate 4×4 collection. Snack box for the drive south through the Maasai steppe.
    09:30

    13:00
Bush picnic lunch by the riverPicnic at a scenic riverside location. Herds crossing the water visible from the picnic site on most days.
    14:30
Afternoon — baobab woodland & predatorsMove into the giant baobab forest zone. Your guide searches for leopard in tree crevices and lion in the shade of large acacias.

  2. Lake Manyara is today's centrepiece — and the day guests most often describe as the most unexpected highlight of the safari. Drive from Tarangire (~1.5 hours) to the Manyara gate, entering through the dense groundwater forest before emerging onto the open soda lake floodplain. Your guide prioritises the tree-climbing lion search: the fever tree woodland is where the resident prides rest in the branches, sometimes with cubs, sometimes five lions in a single tree. Afternoon continues up into the Ngorongoro highlands for overnight.

    07:30
Breakfast & depart for ManyaraDrive north through Babati to Lake Manyara Gate (~1.5 hours). Brief Maasai steppe landscapes on approach.
    09:30
Enter Manyara — groundwater forestBegin in the dense forest zone. Blue monkeys, baboons, and forest elephants. The contrast with Tarangire's open savanna is immediate and striking.
    10:30
Tree-climbing lion searchYour guide drives the fever tree woodland systematically, checking known resting trees and using radio contacts with other guides. Manyara's lions have been resting in trees for decades — this is their home territory. Most reliably sighted October–February.
    12:30
Lake shore — flamingoes, hippo & pelicansDrive along the soda lake margin. Flamingo density varies by season — sometimes tens of thousands colouring the shallows pink. Hippo pods in the permanent pools, sometimes 30+ animals visible together.
    14:00
Depart & drive to Ngorongoro HighlandsExit Manyara and ascend through the Conservation Area highlands toward the crater rim. Maasai villages alongside the road. Cooler, greener, spectacular views.
    18:30
Check in — rim lodge or campOvernight near the Ngorongoro crater rim. On clear evenings the caldera is visible from the lodge. Tomorrow: the Serengeti.

  3. The drive from the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti is one of East Africa's great journeys — moorland to open savanna via the Naabi Hill Gate. Game drives begin immediately on entry into the central Seronera area — home to the highest year-round predator density on the Serengeti. Afternoon and sunset drive before overnight at your Serengeti camp.

    07:30
Breakfast & depart for SerengetiDrive through the NCA highlands and descend to the Serengeti plains (~2 hours). The landscape transforms dramatically at Naabi Hill.

The Big Five — plus tree-climbing lions

The 5-day circuit offers genuine Big Five opportunities across multiple parks, with the Ngorongoro Crater providing the most concentrated viewing. Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions — the sixth extraordinary encounter on this circuit — are found nowhere else on the standard safari route.

Frequently asked questions

  • The key difference is Lake Manyara National Park on Day 2. The 5-day circuit adds a genuinely distinctive park experience — tree-climbing lions, flamingo-pink lake shallows, and dense groundwater forest — that the 4-day circuit does not include. The extra day also creates a better overall pacing: the approach to the Serengeti via Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands feels more natural and less rushed than the 4-day version. The price difference between the two is modest — if your schedule allows the extra day, the 5-day is consistently a better experience.
  • No wildlife sighting can be guaranteed — the animals are wild and move freely. However, the tree-climbing lion population at Lake Manyara is resident and stable, and our guides have current radio contact with other guides tracking the prides. Sightings are reliably available for most groups who visit — the question is usually how close and how many lions in the tree, not whether any are visible. October–February are the peak months. If lion sightings are a specific priority, mention this when booking so your guide can adjust the Day 2 approach accordingly.
  • Yes — the 5-day safari is one of our most popular post-Kilimanjaro add-ons. After descending Kilimanjaro and a full recovery day in Moshi, you depart on Day 1 of this safari, returning to Moshi on Day 5 evening. The total expedition runs approximately 13–15 days depending on your Kilimanjaro route length. Contact us for combined Kilimanjaro + 5-day safari pricing — booking as a single package provides better value and seamless logistics.
  • Absolutely. A full dawn-to-dusk Serengeti day — beginning at 6:00 am with the last of the night's predator activity, bush breakfast in the field, a full morning tracking big cats, kopje picnic lunch with wildebeest to the horizon, and afternoon migration drives — is, by most travellers' accounts, the finest single day of wildlife observation available anywhere on Earth. The experience of a full Serengeti day is qualitatively different from an afternoon or morning drive. The two-night Serengeti stay is one of the most important features of the 5-day circuit.
  • Yes — after returning to Moshi or Arusha on Day 5 evening, a connecting flight to Zanzibar the following morning is a natural next step for travellers with more time. We arrange the full Zanzibar extension including flights, beach accommodation, and any island activities you'd like to include. The complete sequence — Kilimanjaro + 5-day safari + Zanzibar — is Tanzania's greatest three-act trip.
