About this combo expedition

The Kilimanjaro + Safari Combo is Tanzania's most complete adventure — combining the physical and spiritual achievement of summiting Africa's highest freestanding mountain with the jaw-dropping wonder of tracking the Big Five across the world's most celebrated wildlife landscape. Two very different experiences, bound together by Tanzania's extraordinary natural richness and managed by a single expert team.

After your Kilimanjaro descent and a recovery day in Moshi, you seamlessly transition into your safari vehicle for five days through the Northern Circuit — Tarangire's legendary elephant herds, Lake Manyara's flamingo-pink shoreline, the Serengeti's endless plains, and the enclosed wonder of Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Africa's densest concentrations of wildlife.

Why do Kilimanjaro first?

We always recommend climbing Kilimanjaro before the safari — not after. Kilimanjaro demands physical and mental peak performance. You want to arrive at the mountain fresh. After the climb, the safari provides the perfect physical recovery: sitting in a game vehicle watching extraordinary wildlife is a profoundly restorative way to decompress after the mountain's demands. The contrast between exertion and wonder makes each experience more powerful.

One seamless expedition — no logistics gaps

Because Resilience Expeditions handles both the climb and the safari, there are no handovers, no coordination gaps, and no waiting. Your summit certificate is presented at Mweka Gate on Day 1 of your recovery day. Your safari vehicle and guide are confirmed and ready for departure the next morning. Everything is managed by the same team you trusted on the mountain.

Step 2 — Your 5-day Northern Circuit Safari

After your recovery day in Moshi, your private safari vehicle and expert naturalist guide collect you from your hotel for five days through Tanzania's finest wildlife landscapes. All meals and lodge accommodation included.

  1. Your first safari day is a strong one. Tarangire is Tanzania's most underrated park — vast baobab forests, the Tarangire River drawing wildlife from across the region in the dry season, and elephant herds that can number in the hundreds. It is less visited than the Serengeti but no less extraordinary.

  2. Lake Manyara is compact but spectacular — a soda lake at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, famous for its tree-climbing lions, enormous hippo pools, and the pink shimmer of flamingoes wading in the shallows. Afternoon drive continues toward the Ngorongoro Highlands.

  3. The drive from Ngorongoro into the Serengeti is an experience in itself — descending through the crater rim highlands into Tanzania's most iconic landscape. The first afternoon game drive on the Serengeti's central Seronera plains is a defining moment of any East African safari. Lions, leopard, cheetah, and a cast of tens of thousands.

  4. A full day on the Serengeti — arguably the finest single day of wildlife viewing available anywhere on Earth. Dawn game drive at 6:00am as lions return from the hunt, a picnic lunch by a kopje (rock outcrop), and an afternoon drive through wildebeest herds that can stretch to the horizon. Your naturalist guide tracks big cats by radio and experience.

  5. The finale. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a 260 km² closed ecosystem with no exit for most wildlife. This creates an extraordinary density of animals. The crater floor contains approximately 25,000 large mammals including one of Africa's most accessible black rhino populations. You descend in the morning, drive for 6–7 hours on the crater floor, and ascend in the afternoon for the drive back to Moshi or Arusha.

The Big Five — all on this safari

The Northern Circuit gives you a genuine chance of seeing all five across the 5-day itinerary. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places on Earth where all five can be seen in a single day.

Frequently asked questions

  • Always Kilimanjaro first, safari second. Kilimanjaro requires peak physical performance — you want to arrive at the mountain fresh and strong, not having spent days in a game vehicle. After the climb, the safari is the ideal recovery: sitting in a comfortable vehicle watching extraordinary wildlife is restorative after the mountain's demands. The psychological contrast also makes each experience more powerful.
  • We include one full recovery day in Moshi between the Kilimanjaro descent and the safari departure. This gives you time to shower, sleep in a real bed, eat a proper meal, and physically recover before the early safari departure the next morning. If you'd prefer two recovery days, we can arrange this — just mention it when enquiring.
  • Our most popular combo pairing is the 8-day Lemosho Route + Safari, which gives you Kilimanjaro's best scenery, ~92% summit success rate, and a relaxed acclimatization profile that means you arrive at the safari genuinely recovered. The 7-day Machame Route is also excellent. We advise against using the 5-day Marangu or 6-day Machame for this combo — the lower acclimatization time means you may feel unwell on Day 1 of the safari.
  • Absolutely — and many of our combo travellers do exactly this. A 3–5 day Zanzibar beach extension at the end of the safari makes the perfect finale: mountain, wilderness, then ocean. We arrange Zanzibar ferries or flights, accommodation, and activities. Ask for the Kilimanjaro + Safari + Zanzibar three-part package when you enquire.
  • All our combo safaris are private — your group has a dedicated vehicle and guide throughout. You are not placed into a shared vehicle with strangers. This means your guide can tailor the experience to your interests (photography, birding, big cat tracking), adjust pace to suit you, and stay as long as you want at any sighting.
  • The combo works year-round, but the best months for both Kilimanjaro and the Northern Circuit safari are January–February (dry, cold, excellent visibility) and June–October (the dry peak season — the wildebeest calving and migration are active, predator activity is highest). The Great Migration's river crossings occur in July–September in the Northern Serengeti — if that is a priority, plan your combo to end in the safari during those months.
