Planning your safari

Great Migration — month by month

The Great Migration is a year-round spectacle — the wildebeest never stop moving. Every month offers a different and extraordinary spectacle across the Serengeti ecosystem.

Months Where the migration is Highlight spectacle Overall game viewing
Jan – Feb Southern Serengeti plains Calving season — 500k births Excellent
March Central Serengeti Predator concentration at calving grounds Good
Apr – May Western corridor moving north Long rains — green & dramatic skies Good
Jun – Jul Western corridor · Grumeti Grumeti River crossings Excellent
Aug – Oct Northern Serengeti · Mara River ★ Mara River crossings — peak drama Excellent
November Returning south Herds spread across central Serengeti Good
December Southern Serengeti Pre-calving concentration on the plains Excellent
There is no bad time to visit the Serengeti

While the river crossing season (August–October) delivers the most dramatic images, every month offers extraordinary wildlife. January–February calving is arguably more emotionally powerful than crossings. Year-round resident predators — lion, leopard, cheetah — mean spectacular sightings in every single month. We've never had a guest return disappointed.

Guest stories

What travellers say after the Serengeti

★★★★★

"Day 4 of the 5-day safari — a full Serengeti day starting at 6 am — was the single finest day of wildlife watching I've experienced in 25 years of travel. Our guide Emmanuel knew exactly where the cheetah family was resting before I'd even finished my coffee."

James Whitmore
5-Day Northern Circuit · August 2024
★★★★★

"The Ngorongoro Crater descent was unlike anything I'd imagined. We found both the black rhino mother with a calf AND a lion pride with cubs within the first hour. The private vehicle meant we could stay as long as we wanted with no pressure."

Nadia Kowalczyk
4-Day Northern Circuit · November 2024
★★★★★

"After summiting Kilimanjaro, I honestly thought nothing could match that feeling. Then on Day 2 of the safari our guide spotted the leopard sleeping in a tree 40 m from the vehicle. The whole trip — Kilimanjaro to Serengeti — was the greatest two weeks of my life."

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Every safari includes: a private 4×4 vehicle with pop-up roof hatch, TANAPA-licensed naturalist guide for the full duration, all national park fees, Ngorongoro Crater descent fees where applicable, all accommodation, all meals full board, bottled water in the vehicle, and transfers from Moshi or Arusha. No hidden fees — the quoted price is everything.
  • The Migration is year-round — there is no bad month. The famous Mara River crossings happen August–October in the northern Serengeti. The calving season (January–February) is arguably more dramatic. The wildebeest are always somewhere in the Serengeti ecosystem and your guide will know exactly where.
  • 100% private — always. Your group has a dedicated vehicle and guide for the entire safari. You will never share a vehicle with strangers. This means you control your schedule, stay at any sighting for as long as you want, choose where you go for picnic lunches, and receive completely personalised guidance from your naturalist throughout.
  • Tips are an important part of the safari economy. The standard recommendation is $20–30 per person per day for the guide, and $10–15 per person per day for the driver if a separate driver is assigned. For a 5-day safari with 2 people, budget approximately $200–300 USD total in tips. We provide guidance on tip amounts and a distribution envelope before your safari begins.
  • Yes — the Kilimanjaro + safari combination is our most-booked package. Summit Kilimanjaro, rest one day in Moshi, then start your safari. We coordinate both as a single booking so that any delay on Kilimanjaro is automatically absorbed without affecting your safari start date. See our Kilimanjaro + Safari combo page for full pricing and itineraries.
  • All three tiers use the same vehicle, guide, route, and parks. The difference is where you sleep. Budget camping is public campsites with dome tents and a camp cook — raw and authentic. Mid-range uses permanent tented camps and comfortable lodges — the sweet spot for most travellers. Luxury uses five-star tented camps with en-suite bathrooms, plunge pools, and butler service. Mention your preference in the enquiry form and we'll match a specific property for each park.
  • Yes — Tanzania is one of Africa's most stable and safe tourist destinations. The Northern Circuit parks are actively managed with TANAPA rangers and a strong infrastructure. Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard, our guides are licensed and first-aid trained, and our Moshi team is available 24/7 throughout your safari. We have sent thousands of guests through these parks without a single safety incident.
  • After you submit an enquiry through any "View package" button, our team responds within 24 hours with a personalised itinerary, accommodation options, and a confirmed price. You review the proposal, ask any questions, and confirm with a 30% deposit. Final balance is due 60 days before departure. We accept bank transfer, credit card, and PayPal. No payment is ever requested before you've seen and approved your proposal.
