What climbers say after reaching the summit

★★★★★

"Standing at Uhuru Peak at 6:15 am, watching the sun rise over the clouds with our guide David beside us — this was the most profound moment of my life. The 8-day Lemosho route gave us all the time we needed to acclimatise and enjoy every single day."

Sarah Johnson
Lemosho 8-Day · February 2025
★★★★★

"As someone who gets altitude sick easily, I was nervous. The guides checked my SpO2 twice a day and gave me honest information at every step. They knew when to push and when to rest. Reached the summit on the Machame 7-day. Absolutely life-changing."

Marcus Petersen
Machame 7-Day · January 2025
★★★★★

"We chose Rongai because we wanted quiet. We saw elephants on Day 1, barely passed 10 other climbers the entire trek, and had the crater rim viewpoint almost to ourselves at sunrise. The crew were extraordinary. Already planning to come back."

Amélie Laurent
Rongai 7-Day · March 2025
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Every Kilimanjaro package includes: KPAP-certified lead guide and assistant guide(s), all crew (porters, cook, waiter), Kilimanjaro National Park fees, camping and hut fees, rescue levy, emergency oxygen, pulse oximeter monitoring at every camp, all meals full board, bottled water, and hotel transfers from Moshi. Tips for your crew are not included — the standard tip is approximately $30–50 per person per day divided across the crew.
  • The climb duration shown in each package is the number of days from first gate entry to final descent, including all hiking and summit days. Add one day before (arriving in Moshi, kit check, guide briefing) and one day after (descent completion, tip ceremony, rest). So an 8-day Lemosho package requires approximately 10 days total in Tanzania just for the climb — plus any safari or beach days you add after.
  • For Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, and Marangu routes — no technical mountaineering experience is required. These are trekking routes, not technical climbs. You need good fitness, appropriate gear, and a willingness to walk slowly. The Umbwe route requires prior high-altitude hiking experience (3,500 m+) due to its extremely steep approach. All routes require several months of physical preparation — see our 16-week training programme guide.
  • Kilimanjaro is climbable year-round. The two best windows are January–March (dry, warm, clearest views) and June–October (peak dry season, less cloud on the summit). The long rains (April–May) are the most challenging period — cold, wet, lower visibility — but still very manageable with proper gear and an experienced guide. December is increasingly popular and offers a quieter mountain with good conditions.
  • The key items are: waterproof hiking boots (broken in for 40+ hours), a 4-season sleeping bag (rated to -10°C comfort), trekking poles, a waterproof jacket and trousers, warm mid layers, a warm hat and balaclava, heavy gloves and liner gloves, gaiters, and a 25–30 litre day pack. Gear rental is available in Moshi — see our complete Kilimanjaro Gear List guide for everything you need.
  • Absolutely — and it's one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in the world. We handle both as a single combined expedition from our Moshi base. The sequence is always Kilimanjaro first, then one recovery day in Moshi, then the safari (4–6 days Northern Circuit), and optionally Zanzibar. See our complete Kilimanjaro + Safari expedition guide for everything you need to plan a combined trip.
  • Tips are an important part of the Kilimanjaro economy and are deeply appreciated by your crew. The KPAP-recommended tip is approximately $30–50 per climber per day, divided across the entire crew (guides, assistant guides, porters, cook, waiter). For an 8-day Lemosho with 2 climbers, budget approximately $500–700 USD total in tips. We provide a tip distribution envelope and guidance on amounts before your summit day.
  • Our guides check your SpO2 at every camp using a pulse oximeter. For mild AMS (headache, mild fatigue), we rest at the same altitude and monitor closely. For moderate-to-severe AMS or any signs of HACE or HAPE, we initiate immediate descent — no debate. All guides carry emergency supplemental oxygen. We have a direct relationship with KINAPA's rescue service for emergency extractions. We always prioritise your safety over your summit ambition — and this is non-negotiable.
