About this climb

The Machame Route — nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its reputation as the more adventurous counterpart to the Marangu "Coca-Cola Route" — is the most popular and widely considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the south-west, threading through dense rainforest, dramatic heather moorland, and the spectacular Shira Plateau before an unforgettable traverse beneath the Southern Glaciers.

The 7-day itinerary delivers exceptional acclimatization through an important "climb high, sleep low" day on Day 4 — ascending to the Lava Tower at 4,630 m before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,960 m. This single design feature is responsible for the Machame's significantly higher summit success rate compared to the 5-day Marangu Route.

The Barranco Wall — the highlight of the climb

On Day 5 you scale the famous 300-metre Barranco Wall — a rocky cliff face tackled as a hands-and-feet scramble. No ropes or technical equipment are needed. Your guides position above and below for every climber. The views from the top are extraordinary. Virtually every Machame climber cites it as the most memorable section of the entire mountain.

Tented camping — your crew does the work

Unlike the Marangu Route, the Machame uses tented campsites. Your porters carry all tents, kitchen equipment, and your main bag (max 15 kg). You carry only a 15–20 L daypack on the trail. Camp is set up and dinner is ready when you arrive at each site.

Who should choose the Machame Route?

The Machame Route is ideal for fit, adventurous climbers who want the best scenery on Kilimanjaro, enjoy a physical challenge, and don't need hut accommodation. If you prefer sleeping in huts, see our 6-day Marangu Route. If you want the highest possible success rate, see our 8-day Lemosho Route.

7-day itinerary

  1. The Machame Route begins at the gate nestled in the forest foothills south-west of the mountain. Today's trek immediately plunges into one of Africa's finest montane rainforests — lush, cool, and alive with birds and monkeys. The climb is steady but demanding from the first steps.

    1. 07:00
      Pickup from Moshi hotel

Briefing, final gear check, and 1.5-hour drive to Machame Gate (1,830 m). Register at park gate while porters load bags.

    2. 09:30
      Enter rainforest — begin climb

Trail enters dense montane forest. Good chance of seeing black-and-white colobus monkeys, buffalo, and a dazzling variety of birds and epiphytic plants.

    3. 13:00
      Lunch in the forest

Hot lunch on the trail. Porters have overtaken you and the camp is already being set up above.

    4. 16:30
      Arrive Machame Camp (2,980 m)

First campsite — dramatic heather moorland with views opening to the south. Dinner, hot drinks, and oxygen saturation check by guide.

    • 📍 ~11 km
    • ⏱ 5–7 hrs
    • ⛰ 1,830 m → 2,980 m
    • ⛺ Machame Camp
  2. You climb out of the heather zone and ascend onto the ancient Shira Plateau — the collapsed caldera of Kilimanjaro's original western volcanic peak. The plateau is vast, flat, and hauntingly beautiful, with Kibo's summit cone rising dramatically to the east.

    1. 07:00
      Depart Machame Camp

Steep initial ascent through the heather-moorland transition zone. Giant heathers and lobelias appear.

    2. 10:00
Ridge views — Kibo reveals itself

Reach the ridge above the forest. First clear view of Kibo's ice-capped summit. The Southern Glaciers glint white in the distance.

    3. 13:00
      Arrive Shira Camp (3,840 m)

Camp on the open Shira Plateau. Spectacular 360° views. Afternoon rest to begin acclimatization at this elevated camp. Optional short walk to higher ground.

    • 📍 ~8 km
    • ⏱ 4–6 hrs
    • ⛰ 2,980 m → 3,840 m
    • ⛺ Shira Camp
  3. This is the most physiologically important day of the Machame Route. You ascend to the iconic Lava Tower at 4,630 m — higher than any peak in the Alps — for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960 m. This deliberate "climb high, sleep low" profile powerfully stimulates your body's altitude adaptation response.

    1. 07:30
Depart Shira Camp — east across the plateau

Trek toward Kibo across the barren Shira Plateau. Trail passes the Shira Cathedral ridge and enters the alpine desert zone.

    2. 12:00
      Lava Tower — 4,630 m (lunch)

Reach the dramatic 300-metre volcanic plug. Altitude symptoms may be noticeable — rest and eat. This is higher than Mont Blanc's summit.

    3. 14:00
Descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Long descent into the spectacular Great Barranco Valley. The Valley is dramatically carved, with the Barranco Wall rising sheer ahead. Altitude discomfort eases on the descent.

    4. 17:30
      Camp & acclimatization briefing

Dinner at camp with a direct view of tomorrow's Barranco Wall challenge. Guide walks through the wall ascent plan.

    • 📍 ~14 km
    • ⏱ 6–8 hrs
    • ⛰ 3,840 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m
    • ⛺ Barranco Camp
  4. The day every Machame climber talks about. After crossing the valley floor, you begin the famous Barranco Wall — a 300-metre exposed rock scramble requiring hands and feet. It is non-technical (no ropes, no climbing gear), but it is steep, thrilling, and exhilarating. Your guides lead from front and position themselves to assist every member of the team. Most people call it the best part of the entire climb.

    1. 07:00
      Approach the Barranco Wall

Cross the valley floor and begin the wall ascent. The lower section is steep scree; the upper section becomes true hands-on-rock scrambling. Take your time. Trust your guide.

    2. 10:00
Summit of the Wall — extraordinary views

Emerge on top of the wall into one of Kilimanjaro's greatest panoramas. The Southern Ice Fields are directly ahead. Look back at the valley you've just climbed out of.

    3. 12:30
      Arrive Karanga Camp (3,995 m)

A shorter and more relaxed final section to Karanga. Lunch at camp. Rest — today was demanding and tomorrow begins the approach to the summit launch pad.

    • 📍 ~6 km
    • ⏱ 4–5 hrs
    • ⛰ 3,960 m → 3,995 m
    • 🧗 Barranco Wall scramble
    • ⛺ Karanga Camp
  5. A shorter, crucial day. Arriving early at Barafu allows maximum rest time before the midnight summit push. Every hour of sleep and every litre of water you drink today directly improves your summit performance tonight.

    1. 07:30
Depart Karanga — ascend to Barafu

Short but relentless climb through rocky alpine desert. The air is noticeably thin. Take it slowly and deliberately.

    2. 11:30
Arrive Barafu Base Camp (4,673 m)

Perched dramatically between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Lunch immediately on arrival, then rest.

    3. 16:00
      Full summit night briefing

Guide briefs the complete summit push: wake-up at 23:00, pace, layering system, turn-back criteria, and group protocol.

    4. 17:30
      Early dinner & sleep

High-calorie dinner. Try to sleep even if altitude makes it difficult. Wake-up call at 23:00 sharp.

    • 📍 ~4 km
    • ⏱ 3–4 hrs
    • ⛰ 3,995 m → 4,673 m
    • ⛺ Barafu Camp
  6. The summit push. You leave Barafu at midnight in total darkness, headlamps cutting through the black, ascending steep scree and volcanic rock toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, a walk along the crater edge delivers you to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa — in time for one of the world's most extraordinary sunrises. A long but triumphant descent follows.

    1. 23:00
Wake up — begin the push

Hot tea, biscuits, final layer check. Temperature: −10°C to −20°C near the summit. Headlamps on. One step at a time. Pole, pole (slowly, slowly).

    2. 05:00
      Stella Point — Crater Rim (5,745 m)

The hardest stretch complete. First light begins to appear. A short rest at the rim — you can already see the curvature of the Earth. TANAPA certificate available here for those who cannot continue.

    3. 06:15
      UHURU PEAK — 5,895 m 🏔

The Roof of Africa. Full sunrise over an ocean of clouds. The famous yellow summit sign. Your guide takes your summit photograph. Allow the moment to arrive fully — you earned this.

    4. 08:00
      Begin descent to Mweka Camp

Long descent on exhausted legs via Mweka Route. Trekking poles absolutely essential. Arrive Mweka Camp in the afternoon for your final night on the mountain.

    • 📍 ~18 km total
    • ⏱ 12–15 hrs
    • ⛰ 4,673 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
    • ⛺ Mweka Camp
  7. The final morning. A leisurely breakfast, heartfelt goodbyes with your camp crew, and a gentle descent through the rainforest back to Mweka Gate, where your official TANAPA summit certificate awaits. The porters' farewell song at the gate is one of the most emotionally powerful moments of the entire Kilimanjaro experience.

    1. 07:30
      Final breakfast & porter farewells

Unhurried morning. Sign the porter tip register. Say goodbye to each porter and guide by name — they made your summit possible.

    2. 08:30
      Descend to Mweka Gate

3–4 hour walk through lush rainforest. Legs are tired but spirits are high. Trekking poles on steep sections.

    3. 12:30
      Mweka Gate — certificate presentation

Your official TANAPA Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate is presented. Porters and guides perform their traditional farewell song. Karibu sana — you summited Africa.

    4. 14:00
Return to Moshi — celebration dinner

Hot shower, rest, and a group celebration dinner in Moshi. End of services.

    • 📍 ~9 km

Frequently asked questions

  • Prices range from $1,900 (standard group) to $2,800 (private luxury) per person. All packages include all TANAPA park fees, camping fees for 6 nights, all mountain tents, meals, KPAP-certified guides and porters, emergency oxygen, and the official TANAPA summit certificate. International flights and visa are separate.
  • The Machame Route earned the "Whiskey Route" nickname as a contrast to the Marangu Route's "Coca-Cola Route" moniker. The implication is that Machame is tougher, more adventurous, and more rewarding — a drink for serious climbers. The name stuck because the Machame genuinely is more physically demanding with steeper terrain, no hut accommodation, and the challenging Barranco Wall scramble.
  • The Barranco Wall is a 300-metre rocky cliff face on Day 4 of the Machame Route. It requires hands-and-feet scrambling — meaning you use your hands on the rocks for balance and support, not just trekking poles. It is non-technical: no ropes, no harnesses, no climbing equipment required. Our guides position themselves above and below every climber. It is steep and exposed in places, but virtually every healthy adult can complete it safely with a guide. The great majority of our climbers rate it the highlight of the climb.
  • No. Your porters carry all camping equipment — tents, sleeping mats, kitchen gear, and your main duffel bag (max 15 kg). On the trail you carry only your daypack (15–20 L) with personal items, water, snacks, and a jacket. Your camp is fully set up with tent pitched, sleeping mat laid out, and dinner started when you arrive at each campsite.
  • Our 7-day Machame Route achieves approximately 85% summit success. The key driver is the Day 3 acclimatization profile — ascending to Lava Tower (4,630 m) before descending to sleep at Barranco (3,960 m). This "climb high, sleep low" design gives your body an extra altitude stimulus while allowing recovery before the summit push. If maximising success rate is your priority, consider our 8-day Lemosho Route which achieves approximately 92%.
  • Yes — without exception. Resilience Expedition is a registered KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project) partner. Every porter receives wages above the KPAP fair wage standard, is never loaded beyond TANAPA's 20 kg weight limit, receives appropriate clothing and equipment for every climb, is covered by health and accident insurance, and receives enough food. Porter welfare is a non-negotiable part of how we operate on every single climb.
