What guests say about Mwanza

Lake Victoria sunset boat trip testimonial
"
★★★★★

"The sunset boat trip on Lake Victoria was the single most beautiful hour of my entire Tanzania journey — and I climbed Kilimanjaro. The granite boulders turning orange, the fishing boats returning, and the absolute silence of Africa's largest lake. I wasn't expecting Mwanza to move me so much."

Rubondo Island testimonial

★★★★★

"Rubondo Island is the best wildlife experience I've never heard anyone talk about. We tracked wild chimpanzees for three hours — no other visitors, no vehicles, just us and the chimps in the forest. The fly-in from Mwanza takes 25 minutes. Why does no one know about this place?"

"The Sukuma snake dance is genuinely unlike anything I've witnessed in 30 years of travel. When the dancers started moving with live pythons draped across their shoulders to the thundering drums — my jaw simply dropped. Mwanza's cultural experiences are as extraordinary as any wildlife safari."

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Mwanza is famous for three things internationally: its extraordinary granite kopje landscape (earning it the nickname "Rock City"), its position on Africa's largest lake — Lake Victoria — and the iconic Bismarck Rock balanced boulder that has appeared on Tanzanian currency. Among wildlife enthusiasts, Mwanza is increasingly known as the gateway to Rubondo Island National Park (wild chimpanzees, virtually no visitors), the Serengeti Western Corridor (Grumeti River crossings, far fewer vehicles than the northern Serengeti), and world-class Nile perch sport fishing.
  • The fastest option from both Dar es Salaam and Arusha is by domestic flight — Precision Air and Air Tanzania operate daily connections to Mwanza Airport (MWZ). Flight time from Dar es Salaam is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes; from Arusha approximately 1 hour 10 minutes via a connection. There are also overnight ferry services from Dar es Salaam across Lake Victoria, which take around 24 hours and are a unique experience in their own right. We arrange all transfers — simply send us your arrival details.
  • Swimming in the open lake near Mwanza is not generally recommended for visitors due to the risk of bilharzia (schistosomiasis), a parasitic infection present in many African freshwater lakes. Our boat trips are designed for scenic enjoyment, photography, and fishing — not open-water swimming near the shore. The exception is Lake Chala near Moshi, which is bilharzia-free and safe for swimming. On Rubondo Island, guided lake-edge activities are managed carefully by the park staff. Always consult your guide before entering any freshwater body in Tanzania.
  • Mwanza is excellent for families. The Saanane Island National Park (10-minute boat ride, giraffe and zebra) is ideal for children of all ages. The Sukuma Museum and cultural activities are engaging for older children. The sunset boat trip on Lake Victoria is magical for families — utterly safe, calm water, and the granite boulder landscape is genuinely awe-inspiring for children. The Mwanza Nile perch food tour and cycling tour both work well with children from about age 8. Tell us your children's ages when enquiring and we'll build the perfect itinerary.
  • A day trip to Rubondo Island is technically possible by light aircraft (25-minute flight from Mwanza) — arriving for a morning chimpanzee trek and returning in the afternoon. However, we strongly recommend a minimum two-night stay. The chimpanzees require patience and time to locate, and the island's birdlife, fishing, and forest atmosphere are not things you want to rush. The island has very limited accommodation — just one excellent camp — which books out during peak season. For 2026 and 2027, we recommend booking Rubondo at least 4–6 months ahead for July–September dates.
  • Swahili is the main language of Mwanza and Tanzania generally. The local Sukuma language is widely spoken in the surrounding region. English is understood in hotels, tourism businesses, and the airport, but is less commonly spoken than in Arusha or Dar es Salaam — Mwanza sees far fewer international tourists and the local economy is more oriented toward domestic Tanzania. All Resilience Expeditions guides in Mwanza are fluent English speakers. Learning a few Swahili phrases — "Habari" (How are you?), "Asante sana" (Thank you very much), "Karibu" (Welcome) — will genuinely delight locals in this less-touristy city.
  • The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US Dollars are accepted at hotels and by tourism operators but less widely than in Arusha or Zanzibar — Mwanza is a genuine Tanzanian city rather than a tourist hub. There are ATMs at the CRDB and NMB banks near the city centre that dispense Tanzanian Shillings; bring USD cash as backup. Activity payments can be made in USD to Resilience Expeditions. Credit cards are accepted at a small number of hotels but not widely — we recommend having cash on hand for markets and local restaurants.
  • Absolutely — and we highly recommend combining them. The most popular circuit we build from Mwanza: 2 nights in Mwanza (sunset boat trip, Sukuma Museum, Bismarck Rock), then 3 days in the Serengeti Western Corridor (Grumeti River, Big Five), then crossing to the central or northern Serengeti and ending in Ngorongoro. This west-to-east routing is more scenic and avoids backtracking. Alternatively, fly from Mwanza directly to the Serengeti (30 minutes by light aircraft) and combine with Ngorongoro before flying back to Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro. Contact us to design your complete Tanzania circuit.
