What guests say about Moshi

"
★★★★★

"We spent 3 days in Moshi after Kilimanjaro and did Materuni, Lake Chala, and the Chagga village walk. Every single day was extraordinary. Materuni is hands down the best half-day experience I've ever done anywhere in the world — the waterfall, the coffee, the lunch with the family. I came home talking about it more than the summit."

"Lake Chala is not in any of the guidebooks I brought — I only found it through Resilience Expeditions's suggestion. We kayaked across an emerald crater lake, spotted crocodiles from the rim, and had the whole place to ourselves. It's one of the most beautiful places I've been in my life. Don't skip it."

"The cooking class was my teenage daughter's highlight of the entire Tanzania trip — more than Kilimanjaro, more than the safari. We went to the market together, met the chef, cooked ugali and pilau from scratch, and ate it all for lunch. She's been trying to recreate it at home ever since."

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

  • For visitors not climbing Kilimanjaro, the Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour is consistently rated the best half-day experience in Moshi — and one of the finest in all of Tanzania. It combines a rewarding jungle hike through Chagga villages, a dramatic 70-metre waterfall swim, a complete hands-on coffee tour from tree to cup, and a home-cooked Chagga lunch with a local family — all in five to six hours. For Kilimanjaro climbers, the mountain itself is the obvious answer, with the 7-day Machame Route our most-recommended route for the right balance of scenery, success rate, and experience.
  • Moshi is one of Tanzania's safest and most welcoming towns for international visitors. It has a long history of international tourism built around Kilimanjaro climbing, and the local community is experienced and genuinely hospitable to visitors. Standard travel precautions apply — use reputable guides, avoid displaying expensive valuables, and be aware of your surroundings as you would in any unfamiliar city. All Resilience Expeditions guides are vetted, KINAPA-certified, and local to the area. We provide WhatsApp contact for all guests throughout their stay.
  • Yes — swimming in the pool below Materuni Waterfall is one of the highlights of the tour and is perfectly safe. The water is cold (fed directly from the Kilimanjaro snowmelt), clean, and the pool is surrounded by natural rock formations. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, or your guide will advise you. The swim is entirely optional — many guests prefer to watch and photograph from the banks. The waterfall is most powerful from March to May (long rains) and October to December (short rains), but the pool is swimmable year-round.
  • The Materuni hike is suitable for most fitness levels. The trail is approximately 2 km each way with a moderate ascent through village paths and light jungle — typically taking 45–60 minutes each way at a relaxed pace. There are no technical sections. Children from about age 6 and older generally manage it comfortably with adult assistance on the steeper parts. The elderly and those with mobility challenges should discuss their situation with us — we can adjust the pace and offer trekking poles. The trail can be muddy in rainy season; good walking shoes (not flip-flops) are recommended.
  • Moshi is approximately 50 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), taking around 45 minutes to an hour to drive. This is one of the shortest airport-to-town transfers of any major safari destination in East Africa. Arusha is also served by JRO and is about 80 km from the airport (1 hour). All Resilience Expeditions packages include airport pickup from JRO — simply send us your flight details and a vehicle will meet you at arrivals.
  • Yes — three excellent national parks are within feasible day-trip distance from Moshi. Arusha National Park (1.5 hours) is ideal for a half-day or full-day — flamingoes, Colobus monkeys, giraffe, and walking safaris. Tarangire National Park (2 hours) offers Tanzania's best elephant experience with herds of 100+ in dry season. Lake Manyara (2.5 hours) adds tree-climbing lions and flamingo shores. For longer circuits including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, we recommend staying at least 2 nights away — we offer all Northern Circuit combinations departing from Moshi.
  • Moshi is one of Tanzania's most family-friendly destinations. The Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour, Chagga Village Walk, Tanzanian Cooking Class, and Marangu Village day trip are all excellent for children from about age 6. The coffee tour particularly — picking berries, grinding beans, and drinking the coffee they made themselves — is a genuine highlight for younger visitors. The Kilimanjaro Rainforest Day Hike is suitable for fit children from about age 10. Full Kilimanjaro climbs are generally recommended from age 10–12 depending on the child and route. Tell us your children's ages when enquiring and we'll personalise the recommendations.
  • The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism services, guides, and most lodges in Moshi. Euros and British Pounds can also be exchanged at banks and forex bureaux on the main Moshi street. ATMs dispense Tanzanian Shillings. Swahili is the national language and is spoken everywhere; English is widely understood in tourism areas, hotels, and restaurants in Moshi. Our guides are all fluent English speakers. A few words of Swahili — "Habari" (How are you), "Asante" (Thank you), "Karibu" (Welcome) — go a long way with locals.
