About this safari

The 5-Day Serengeti Classic is Tanzania's definitive safari — a carefully sequenced journey through the Northern Circuit's four greatest parks, designed to build from Tarangire's intimate elephant encounters to the Serengeti's vast theatre of predator and prey, culminating in the concentrated wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater. Two nights in the Serengeti means unhurried time on the world's most famous plains.

Every departure is private — your group has a dedicated 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, an expert TANAPA-licensed naturalist guide, and complete flexibility over pacing, sightings, and priorities. No shared vehicles, no strangers, no compromise. Full board throughout.

Why two nights in the Serengeti matters

Most 4-day circuits spend only one night in the Serengeti, arriving mid-afternoon and leaving the following morning — barely half a day on the plains. This 5-day itinerary gives you a full dawn-to-dusk day in the Serengeti plus one morning game drive before continuing to Ngorongoro. The Serengeti rewards time: a second game drive catches different behaviour, different light, and often the sightings that weren't there yesterday.

Fully private — your vehicle, your pace

All Best Buy Safaris vehicles are private for your group only. Your naturalist guide communicates with other vehicles via radio to find activity, stays at sightings as long as you want, and tailors the experience to whether you're interested in big cats, birds, photography, or simply absorbing the landscape. We never place guests in shared vehicles.

Tarangire National Park

Tanzania's most underrated park — vast baobab forests, the Tarangire River drawing hundreds of elephants, and extraordinary tree density that provides shelter for leopard and lion. Far fewer visitors than the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara National Park

A soda lake at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment — famous for tree-climbing lions, enormous hippo pools, pink flamingo shallows, and extraordinary birdlife. Compact but spectacular.

Serengeti National Park

The world's most iconic wildlife destination — 14,763 km² of plains, kopjes, and acacia woodland. This is where the Great Migration happens, where lion prides are largest, and where the African horizon stretches beyond imagination.

Ngorongoro Crater

The world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a 260 km² enclosed Eden with approximately 25,000 large mammals and one of Earth's most accessible black rhino populations. A closed ecosystem where wildlife has nowhere to go.

Day by day itinerary

  1. Your guide and private 4×4 collect you from your Moshi or Arusha hotel after breakfast. The drive south through the Maasai steppe gives way to Tarangire's distinctive baobab landscape. You enter the park mid-morning for a full game drive along the Tarangire River, where elephant herds can number in the hundreds during the dry season. Lions rest in acacia shade, leopards peer from rocky outcrops, and the birdlife — over 500 species recorded — is staggering.

08:00 — Pickup from hotelPrivate 4×4 vehicle collection from Moshi or Arusha. Snack box provided for the drive.
11:00 — Enter Tarangire National ParkRegister and begin game drive along the river. Afternoon light on elephant herds is exceptional.
13:00 — Bush picnic lunchPacked picnic lunch in a scenic location in the park. Your guide selects a viewpoint over the river valley.
Evening — Check in, sundowner & dinnerArrive at your Tarangire lodge or tented camp. Sundowner drinks at sunset, then dinner under the stars.

  2. A morning departure from Tarangire brings you to Lake Manyara National Park — compact, beautiful, and full of surprises. The groundwater forest gives way to open floodplains, acacia woodlands, and the soda lake itself, famed for its tree-climbing lions, massive hippo pools, and — in season — tens of thousands of flamingoes wading in the pink shallows. Afternoon drive continues up into the Ngorongoro Highlands for your overnight before the crater descent.

  3. The drive from Ngorongoro into the Serengeti is one of East Africa's great journeys — descending through highland forest, passing the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, and then entering the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate as the plains open to an almost incomprehensible horizon. Game driving begins immediately on entry. The central Seronera area is renowned for year-round resident lion prides and leopards lounging in fig trees above the Seronera River.

  4. A full dawn-to-dusk day on the Serengeti — the finest single day of wildlife observation available anywhere in the world. 6:00 am departure to catch the light and the last of the predator activity after the night's hunt. A bush breakfast in the field, a picnic lunch beside a kopje, and an afternoon drive through wildebeest herds that can stretch to the horizon. Your guide tracks big cats by radio, local knowledge, and the subtle signals of other vehicles and circling vultures.

    Migration timing on this day

The Great Migration's composition changes by season: January–March (calving season — thousands of wildebeest calves on the southern plains); June–July (herds massing in the central and western Serengeti); July–October (dramatic river crossings in the north — optional extension available). Your guide maximises sighting opportunities based on current migration position.

  5. The safari's climactic finale. An early departure from the Serengeti brings you to the Ngorongoro Crater rim, where you descend into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a 260 km² closed ecosystem containing approximately 25,000 large mammals. The crater floor is one of Africa's most densely populated wildlife areas and one of the few places on Earth where all of the Big Five can realistically be seen in a single day. The black rhino population here is among the most accessible in Africa. After 6–7 hours on the crater floor, you ascend the rim and drive back to Moshi or Arusha, arriving by early evening.

Best time to visit

The Northern Circuit operates year-round. Timing influences conditions, prices, and what you'll see:

Months Season Game Viewing Migration Prices
Jan – Feb Dry & warm Excellent Calving season — southern Serengeti High
Mar – May Long rains Good Herds on western corridor Low (green season)
Jun – Jul Dry (start) Excellent Massing in central/western High
Aug – Oct Dry (peak) Excellent River crossings — northern Serengeti Highest
Nov Short rains Good Herds returning south Low (green season)
Dec Dry & warm Excellent Herds on southern plains High

The green seasons (March–May, November) offer lush, photographically beautiful landscapes, newborn animals, and significantly lower prices. Game viewing remains excellent — the animals are always there, just dispersed across a richer landscape. Our guides are expert at finding wildlife in all conditions.

Frequently asked questions

  • All our safaris are private — your group has a dedicated 4×4 vehicle and guide for the entire 5 days. You will never be placed in a shared vehicle with strangers. This means your guide can follow your pace, stay at sightings as long as you want, and tailor the focus to your interests — whether that's big cats, birds, photography, or simply sitting with a family of elephants for an hour.
  • All packages include: private vehicle, TANAPA-licensed naturalist guide, all national park entry fees for all four parks, the Ngorongoro Crater descent and crater fees (which are significant and often excluded by cheaper operators), 4 nights accommodation as per your tier, all meals full board, bottled water, and airport or hotel transfers from Moshi or Arusha. What's not included: international flights, visa, personal insurance, alcohol (unless Luxury tier), and tips.
  • Yes — genuinely. The Northern Circuit, and particularly the Ngorongoro Crater, gives a realistic chance of seeing all five. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard are commonly sighted across the circuit. Black rhino is the most challenging — but the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places in Africa with a substantial, accessible population. Your guide will prioritise a rhino search in the crater.
  • Absolutely — our Kilimanjaro + 5-Day Safari Combo is our most popular expedition package. We always recommend doing Kilimanjaro first, safari second — you want to arrive at the mountain fresh, and the safari provides perfect post-climb recovery. The same team manages both legs with no handover gaps. View the combo page for full details and combined pricing.
  • Yes — a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti at dawn is one of Africa's most extraordinary experiences and can be arranged on Day 4 (your full Serengeti day). The balloon departs at first light and lasts approximately 1 hour over the plains, followed by a bush champagne breakfast. The cost is approximately $550 per person and must be booked in advance. Tell us when enquiring and we'll arrange it.
  • Yes, and it makes perfect sense. After five days of game drives, three or four days on Zanzibar's white sand beaches and turquoise Indian Ocean waters is the ideal decompression. We arrange ferry or short flights from Arusha, accommodation, and activities. Ask for the full Safari + Zanzibar quote when you enquire and we'll include everything in one seamless itinerary.
