Arusha National Park Full Day
Tanzania's most accessible national park — just 45 minutes from the city centre.
The Momella Lakes host massive flamingo flocks, hippos, and 400+ bird species. Giraffe, zebra, Colobus
monkeys, and buffalo roam the open woodland beneath the dramatic silhouette of Mount Meru and — on
clear days — Kilimanjaro. Walking safaris with an armed ranger also permitted.
Africa's fifth-highest mountain and Tanzania's greatest hidden gem. The Meru
summit trail passes through the extraordinary volcanic crater to the dramatic Socialist Peak (4,566m)
— with some of the finest views of Kilimanjaro available anywhere. The park is home to giraffe,
elephant, buffalo, and black-and-white Colobus monkeys that often follow trekking groups through the
forest. Exceptional acclimatisation for a subsequent Kilimanjaro climb.

What guests say about Arusha
"
★★★★★
"We spent just one day in Arusha National Park before our Serengeti safari and it
turned out to be one of my favourite wildlife experiences anywhere in Africa. Walking with an armed
ranger through the forest, tracking giraffe on foot — with Kilimanjaro visible on the horizon — was
extraordinary. I wish we'd planned more time."

"I did Mount Meru as acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro and it exceeded every
expectation. The route through the crater is genuinely dramatic — nothing in any guidebook prepares
you for the scale of it. The summit view of Kilimanjaro at dawn, from Meru's peak, is one of the
finest moments of my life."

"The Ng'iresi village walk was the best cultural experience I had in three weeks
across Tanzania. The family lunch, the blacksmith, the mbege banana beer, the ancient irrigation
channels — our guide made it feel genuinely personal, not touristy. We came back to Arusha a week
later and did it again with different friends."

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital — the primary departure point for all
Northern Circuit safaris including Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. It is
situated at 1,400m altitude between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru (Africa's fifth highest peak at
4,566m). Arusha is also famous for the Cultural Heritage Centre and Maasai market, Ng'iresi traditional
village, world-class coffee from the Meru slopes, Arusha National Park (just 45 minutes from the city),
and as the location of the Arusha Peace Accords and international diplomatic activities. Among travellers,
it is increasingly recognised as a destination in its own right — not just a transit stop.
Our recommendations: 1 full day — Arusha National Park (full
day) or Ng'iresi Cultural Walk + coffee tour. 2 full days — Arusha NP on Day 1, Ng'iresi
village + Maasai market on Day 2. 3 full days — add a Tarangire or Lake Manyara day trip
safari. 4+ days — Mount Meru 3-day trek is possible alongside other activities. If
combining Arusha with Kilimanjaro, allow 1–2 nights on arrival for rest and 1–2 nights after the climb for
recovery and an Arusha NP or cultural experience before flying home.
Arusha is one of Tanzania's safest cities for tourists and has a long,
established history of welcoming international visitors. Standard city precautions apply — avoid
displaying expensive items, use our recommended transport rather than unmarked taxis, and be aware of your
surroundings in crowded market areas. The tourist zones (Clock Tower area, Cultural Heritage Centre, main
hotel strips) are well-monitored. All Resilience Expedition activities operate with vetted guides and our
vehicles are all clearly marked. We provide a 24/7 WhatsApp number for every guest throughout their stay.
Most international visitors arrive via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO),
which is located between Arusha and Moshi — approximately 45–55 minutes from Arusha city centre by road.
Arusha also has its own smaller airport (ARK) which handles domestic flights from Dar es Salaam (1 hour),
Zanzibar, and charter connections. Major airlines serving JRO include Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines,
KLM, and Qatar Airways. All Resilience Expedition packages include airport transfer from JRO. We recommend
arriving at least one day before your safari or Kilimanjaro climb begins.
Mount Meru is technically more challenging than Kilimanjaro in terms of terrain
— the final push to the summit involves an exposed ridge with steep drops on both sides. However, it is
considerably lower (4,566m vs 5,895m) which means altitude effects are less severe and the acclimatisation
demands are lower. The 3-day Meru route has a good summit success rate for reasonably fit hikers. Many
experienced Kilimanjaro guides describe Meru as physically more demanding day-for-day but less affected by
altitude. It makes an excellent Kilimanjaro acclimatisation trek — doing Meru 1–2 weeks before Kilimanjaro
significantly increases summit success rates on the higher mountain.
The Serengeti is 4–5 hours from Arusha by road — making a full-day road trip
extremely long (8–10 hours of driving for 2–3 hours in the park). We strongly recommend against a road
day-trip to the Serengeti specifically. Instead: for Serengeti access from Arusha, we recommend at minimum
a 2-night stay (fly-in is possible — 45-minute charter from Arusha). For a genuinely rewarding day-trip
safari from Arusha, Tarangire (2 hours) and Lake Manyara (1.5 hours) are the ideal options. The Ngorongoro
Crater (2 hours) is also excellent for a full day trip. Arusha National Park (45 minutes) is the best
option for a morning or afternoon.
The Ng'iresi Village Walk is consistently our most highly-rated Arusha activity.
The village sits at 1,500m on the lower slopes of Mount Meru — a 30-minute drive from Arusha. The walk is
gentle — mostly on flat village paths through the terraced banana and coffee farms. There is no
challenging terrain. You spend approximately 4–5 hours walking through the village with a local guide who
grew up there, visiting a traditional blacksmith workshop, meeting a herbalist who shows the medicinal
uses of wild plants, sampling mbege (banana beer — alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions), and sharing a
home-cooked Wa-Arusha lunch with a family. Most guests describe it as the most genuinely authentic
cultural experience they had anywhere in Tanzania.
Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) are the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted
at hotels, tour operators, and many restaurants in Arusha's tourist areas — but always bring crisp, new
USD bills (post-2006, no tears or marks). ATMs at CRDB, NMB, and Stanbic banks dispense Tanzanian
Shillings. The best exchange rates are at forex bureaux rather than banks. Bring USD cash as backup — card
acceptance is limited outside major hotels. Maasai market vendors prefer Tanzanian Shillings. Resilience
Expedition activity payments can be made in USD. Tips for guides and cultural experiences are typically
$5–15 per person per activity.
